Making decisions – guessing or knowing…

GuessingGame In all operations are made daily decisions, large and small, some decisions crucial to the success or failure. Attributed this we see many decisions based on “gut feeling” that sometimes is well-founded but too often based on guesswork and reliance on specific individuals. As businesses today are defined by responsibility and hierarchical order so delegated decisions in the company’s various branches and to look at the big picture from aggregated components for greater truths is where guesswork begins. Very few Read More…

Organization in motion – keep the course…

BusinessMap One of the biggest challenges of the majority of large complex enterprises is the ability to act in sync and directing forces towards common goals.
The challenge has many guises and it is often based on the issue of liability, mandates and reward. On this basis – how do you create informational control of the whole? Who is liable? Is it even possible?
Difficult questions which are too often lacking answers, but what is the alternative – to give up is a little too simple solution! Read More…

EPO – for the best of your company…

EPO In sport, we have long heard of EPO as one of many common and contemptible doping so why should now companies invest in EPO.
EPO in this case stands for Enterprise Performance Optimization and is about creating an advantage by establishing a BusinessMap – a digital view of your business. The difference from the world of sport is that this is totally allowed, but yet we see all too many businesses that continue to guess their way forward.

What then makes the BusinessMap to be magic? Read More…

Where are we going? – Putting a strategy…

Strategy day I just became a member of a business network, where we met for the first time last week. Participants in the network are the decision makers and key people from various sectors which provides a good basis for the exchange of experiences, learning and new contacts to seize and both contribute value to and benefit from. The theme of the day was strategy, what is a strategy, what should it include and how can it be achieved? Read More…

Information Management – part 4…

InfoMan4 Now that I painted a view about the challenge for Information Management, its stakeholders and the key technologies it is now time to look at how to proceed. Obviously, there are different possible paths and what I describe here is an approach based on 25 years of experience of successful and less successful ventures. Above all, it is a pragmatic agenda based on creating a shared view, establish maturity and a “BusinessMap” ensuring navigation of the journey. Read More…

Information – the gold of our time…

InfoGold Last week I attended Informatica’s annual meeting in Sweden where several organizations unveiled investments in Information Management, Master Data and Big Data. Furthermore, there were a copuple of striking presentations from Informatica that gave inspiration and real insight into the potential of exploiting the hugely valuable resource that right structured information and data can be. Then listening to the various corporate presentations, one is struck by the difference in targeting efforts, on the one hand seen as an IT responsibility, and on the the other hand seen as driven from business.  How and when is information not a business question?

A shining example was Electrolux Group’s investment in PIM (Product Information Management) as a step in the transformation towards the new “open” world conditions. Starting with collecting, organizing and making product information available for all stakeholders’ needs. The program is clearly driven by the business, but IT cannot ignore but must rather run faster to secure a controlled architecture meeting the needs of the business!

I strongly recognized many of the challenges and motivations that drive the Electrolux program with my last year at IKEA, where I had the opportunity to interview a large number of managers to capture and describe the nature of the needs of information in their aggressive growth agenda. So let’s hope IKEA similarly succeed in making gold of information and data.

Information Management – part 3…

InfoMan3 Finally it’s time to talk technology and solutions, well that’s where it has to land if something really going to happen. For many areas, it is really so, but I would argue that for information management the absolute core to be successful and create value is by making this a business issue and that business managers have control all the way to the technology and solutions.

It is about having control over the entire chain from the needs of information to how the parts of the IT landscape together can be optimized to meet the ever-changing needs. Read More…

Information Management – part 2…

InfoMan2 Finally continuing the series by elaborating on who owns the information management problems and which stakeholders are involved.

First to the central question – is Information Management really a problem? Here it is important to point out that, unfortunately, we see it as a problem because Information Management does not work. A good managed Information Management should be seen as a very important and strategic capability in all parts of the business. Read More…

The return…

semester2014 As you noticed, the blog has not been updated in a while. This is due to a hysterical period before vacation with loads of work and the sudden death of my father-in-law hit by a severe stroke. Then I’ve had a long summer holiday. Now I’m back at the keys and I will during the fall pull in on my commitment and travels with the current customer to regain my presence in Stockholm. This is also to allow time and space to ensure continuity even here on the blog :)
Continuation of series on Information Management will be here within a few days.
